Bokaro district is one of the most industrialized zones in India. It is one of the twenty-four district of Jharkhand state that formed by carving out one subdivision consisting of two blocks from Dhanbad District and six blocks from Giridih District. Bokaro Steel City is the headquarters. It covers a geographical area of 2883 Km2 having an average altitude of 210meters from mean see level. The district has a population of about 2 million (2011 census).
Bokaro Steel City
Bokaro steel city is famous for its steel plant which is the biggest in Asia. It is the fourth integrated public sector steel plant in the built with the help of Soviet. Chas and Chira Chas are the Sub-Urban area if the city. Bokaro Steel City is amongst one of the three headquarters if the Police IG zone, aprt from Ranchi and Dumka, covering seven districts – Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Koderma, Chatra, Bokaro and Ramgarh.
Earlier the region was known as Manbhum. The area became prominent with the establishment of the Steel Plant with the collaboration of the Soviet Union. Later the city was planned and developed with sectors 1 to 12. Each sector is divided in Sub – Sectors A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Interestingly, sector 7 and 10 do not exist. Each sector has shopping center as well as play grounds and recreational areas. The entire city was planned meticulously with avenues, residential area as well as commercial areas. The streets are lined with trees and pedestrian paths. Such meticulous plan for the city can rarely be matched by any city in the Jharkhand and very few cities in India.
According to the 2011 census Bokaro district has a population of 2,062,330. This gives it a ranking of 222nd in India (out of a total of 640).The district has a population density of 716 inhabitants per square kilometer (1,850/sq mi). Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 15.99%. Bokaro has a sex ratio of 916 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 73.48%.
