Dumka is one of the oldest districts of Jharkhand state under Santhal Pargana. This homeland of tribal is full of stunning landscapes, majestic mountains, verdant valleys and serpentine rivers. Dumka is the administrative headquarters of this district. It is situated at the height of 143 meters from the sea level. Dumka has predominantly undulating terrain with hard rocks in the underground. Entire District has a topography with high ridges and valleys bounded by mountains and rivers. The fertility of soil is poor due to extensive erosion, acidic character and low retaining capacity.
The Indian government named Dumka one of the country’s 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640) in 2006. It is one of the 21 districts in Jharkhand currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
Diocesan Territory of Dumka
In a land area of 14,356 square kilometers, the diocesan territory covers Sahibganj, Pakur, Jamtara and Deoghar (excluding Deoghar, Mohanpur and Sarawan blocks) and Rampurhat sub-divion in Birbhum District in West Bengal. There are 3,383,771people in the diocesan territory, 107,114 of them baptised Catholics. Presently headed by Bishop Julius Marandi. Ethnic groups are Santhals, Bengalis, Paharias, Oraons, Muslims, and Hindus.
The District has an area of 3716.02 Sq.KM. and consists of only one sub division namely Dumka There are four Vidhan Sabha constituencies in this district: Sikaripara, Dumka, Jama and Jarmundi. All of these are part of Dumka Lok Sabha constituency. Dumka district consists of 10 Blocks. The following are the list of the Blocks in Dumka district:
According to the 2011 census Dumka district has a population of 13,21,442 and this gives it a ranking of 370th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 351 inhabitants per square kilometer . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 19.39%. Dumka has a sex ratio of 977 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 61%.
