East Singhbhum district is situated at the southeast corner of Jharkhand. It was formed on 16th January 1990 after isolating nine block from old Singhbhum. The word Singhbhum is came from Sanskrit words ‘Singh’ and ‘Bhumi’ which means ‘Loin’ and ‘Land’ respectively, literally makes the meaning ‘Land of the Lions’. Almost 50% to 55% area of the district is covered by the dense forests and mountains where wild animal used to roam once.
The total geographical area of district is about 3533 Sq. kms,which is about 2.03% of the whole state. About 53% of the total area of district is covered by residual mountains and hills consisting of granite, gneiss, schist.It is a part of Chhotanagpur plateau.The Dalma range extends from west to east covered by dense forest on the northern side.The Subernarekha river flows from west to south-east direction.The district is rich in minerals and these are found abundantly.
East Singhbhum Administration
From the administrative point of view this district has been divided into two Sub-Division Dhalbhum and Ghatshila.The district consists of eleven blocks namely Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai(Jamshedpur), Potka, Patamda and Boram in Dhalbhum Sub-Division and Ghatshila, Musabani, Dumaria, Baharagora, Dhalbhumgarh, Chakulia and Gurabandha in Ghatshila Sub-Division.There are 231 Panchayat and about 1815 revenue villages out of which 1669 Revenue Villages are inhabited and rest 146 Revenue villages are uninhabited. The Head Quarter of this district is Jamshedpur.

According to the 2011 census East Singhbhum district has a population of 22,93,919. This gives it a ranking of 199th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 644 inhabitants per square kilometer. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 15.53%. East Singhbhum has a sex ratio of 949 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 75%.
