Giridih is third most populous district of Jharkhand State according to 2011 Indian census. History of Giridih District is a part of the history of its parent district, Hazaribagh as well as also of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The entire territory of Chhota Nagpur, known as Jharkhand was believed to be covered with inaccessible hills and forests. Giridih district was created on 6th December 1972 by carving some parts of Hazaribagh district and in 1999 some parts of Giridih district was carved out to from Bokaro District. This district is currently part of Red Corridor. Giridih District is geographically divided into two natural divisions, which are the central plateau and lower plateau. Though this region was in touch with many parts of India, yet the non-Aryan tribes who resided here had no king. The inhabitant of Chota Nagpur decided to elect a king due to regular foreign invaders and Mundas became the king of the state. Khortha, a blend of Magahi and Bengali, is the main language spoken in Giridih district. The tribal people speak Santhali. The district has rich forest resources and has several jungles of sal trees and bamboos, and a variety of other indigenous trees. Among other common trees are bamboo, semal, Mahua, palash, kusum, kend, Asian pear and bhelwa. Parasnath hills have a number of plants having medicinal use. Leopards, bears, jackals, wild pigs, and hares are the wild animals found in certain parts of the district which have thick forests. Giridih district Kabir gyan mandir and Shanti bhawan are main spiritual place at Giridih.
Giridih Town is the administrative headquarters of Giridih district. There are Thirteen Blocks in Giridih district.
According to the 2011 census Giridih district has a population of 24,45,474. This gives it a ranking of 182nd in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 493 inhabitants per square kilometre. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 28.33%. Giridih has a sex ratio of 944 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 63%.
