Koderma district was formed on 10th April 1994 after being carved out of the original district Hazaribagh. Koderma is surrounded by Giridih District on the East and Hazaribagh district on the South both the districts are part of Jharkhand and by Nawada district on North and Gaya district on West both the districts are part of Bihar.
Koderma town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Although Koderma district is currently part of Red Corridor, Koderma is fastest growing city of the Jharkhand state. The district is enriched with natural resources specially Mica and The is why at one time this was call the Mica capital of India. This huge natural resources gave the lot of mica tycoons in Koderma town and jhumari Tilaiya as well.
Koderma is surrounded by forests and lots of natural resources, Dhawajadhari Pahar (hill) that is dedicated to lord SHIVA and on the MAHASHIVRATRI lots of devotees get together to worship the GOD.Barsoti river flows through the district.
The climate of Koderma can be described as a transition between the dry and moderately extreme climate of the northern India and the warm, humid climate of Bengal Basin. The climatic year of Koderma district can be divided into four principal seasons.
Koderma district has one Sub-division, Kodarma itself and 5 (five) revenue circles. For developmental administration the district is divided into 6 (Six) developmental blocks namely: Koderma, Jainagar, Chandwara, Markachho, Domchanch and Satgawan. There are 717 (Seven Hundred Seventeen) Villages and 109 (One Hundred Nine) Panchayats.
According to the 2011 census Koderma district has a population of 7,16,259. This gives it a ranking of 500th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 427 inhabitants per square kilometer. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 32.59% Kodarma has a sex ratio of 950 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 68.35%.
