Simdega district formed on 30th April 2001 by carving out from erstwhile Gumla District. As of 2011 it is the third least populous district of Jharkhand after Lohardaga and Khunti districts. Simdega district is currently part of Red Corridor. The district is situated in the south western part Jharkhand State.

In ancient time Simdega was known as Biru-Kaishalpur Pargana, which was ruled by Raja Katangadeo. After his death it was subjugated by Maharaja Shivakarna. Subsequently for a few periods it was part of the Kalinga Empire in 1336 AD. It was believed that Munda and Kharia tribes entered in this part in 1441 AD. and in 1503 AD. the Oraon tribes were settled here from Rahtas.

The Ancestors of the Royal family is still resides at Biru. Biru is situated at 11km. distance from main town of Simdega. Simdega is only town in the district and headquartering as well. The rest part of the district is full of the beautiful landscapes and hills. Most part of the district is covered by the forest and primarily settled by the schedule tribes which highest among all the districts of the Jharkhand state.

According to the 2011 census Simdega district has a population of 5,99,578. This gives it a ranking of 526th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 159 inhabitants per square kilometer. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 16.62%. Simdega has a sex ratio of 997 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 67.59%. It is the only Christian majority district in Jharkhand.
